People & Planet policies

A small business with a big, blue heart

As copywriters for the sustainable blue economy, we hold ourselves to high standards and actively work to minimise our footprint. This page outlines the ethical, environmental and social policies that guide both how we write and how we do business. It’s a living document: reviewed regularly and updated as we move forward.

Digital carbon footprint

As a remote business, we rely on our laptops and the internet. Here’s how we keep our digital emissions in check:

  • Our website is hosted on servers powered by 100% renewable energy
  • It was built using low-carbon, green design principles
  • Our domain is also registered with a provider that runs on 100% renewable energy
  • We avoid large attachments, instead using compressed or optimised files and sharing assets via Google Drive
  • Where video isn’t necessary, we switch to audio-only calls to reduce data load and emissions
  • We keep email clutter low by communicating thoughtfully, and we regularly delete unnecessary emails, newsletters and spam that contribute to server load
  • Each month, we take part in a digital cleanup to clear our inboxes, cloud drives and devices.

Conscious business policies

Even though we work remotely, we try to do business lightly

Foundational commitments

Fossil fuel-free finances

All banking is done through an institution that doesn’t fund harmful industries such as fossil fuels, gambling, live animal exports, intensive animal farming, tobacco, or arms and weaponry.

Ocean impact-led clients

Clients must be focused on solving ocean, environmental or social challenges. Those operating in extractive or harmful industries are not accepted.

Support local & ethical

Partnerships with small, local businesses whose practices align with our environmental and social values will be prioritised.

Thoughtful use of AI

We use AI as a thought partner to explore ideas and clarify our thinking. It never replaces the human creativity, judgement or ethical responsibility behind our work.

Careful consumption

Vegetarian office

Food served in the office or at meetings is vegetarian and low-impact by default.

Coffee & snacks

Coffee is Fairtrade, certified organic, shade-grown and carbon neutral. Snacks will be plant-based and plastic-free where possible.

Office supplies

Supplies are purchased thoughtfully, sourced from eco-conscious providers wherever possible, with a preference for reusables and recycled materials.

Printing

Printing is kept to a minimum. Any essential materials are printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper using vegetable-based inks.

Chemical-free cleaning

All cleaning products used in the office are non-toxic, greywater safe, and certified cruelty-free.

Minimal travel

Travel is kept minimal through remote work and online meetings. Some car travel is necessary for co-working, events or volunteering in regional areas.

Waste & recycling

E-waste recycling

Electronics are recycled responsibly, and the lifespan of tech is extended wherever possible.

Paper recycling

All paper and cardboard are either recycled or reused.

Wellbeing & work culture

Rest-positive culture

Working hours, time off and a pace of work that supports wellbeing are respected, for ourselves, collaborators and clients.

Always learning

Ongoing professional development is prioritised, particularly in areas such as climate justice, First Nations perspectives and ocean literacy.

Community contribution

Ocean conservation volunteering

Getting away from the desk is encouraged. This has previously included beach and reef cleanups, marine mammal rescues, and community-led rewilding projects, such as seagrass harvesting.

Payment plans

Payment plans and a lower-cost option are available to help early-stage ocean startups with limited funding access our copywriting services.

We also recognise the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia, their enduring connection to the land and waters and that sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and stand in support of First Nations Voice, Treaty and truth-telling. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
